Threads Marks Two-Year Milestone with Messaging and Highlighter Features

Meta’s Threads app is celebrating two years since its launch — and it’s doing so with some major updates aimed at shaping the platform into Meta’s next major social network.

Since its debut, Threads has grown into a space for vibrant public discourse, with a unique identity emerging beyond its ties to Instagram. In fact, Meta reveals that more than a third of daily Threads users follow mostly different accounts than they do on Instagram, signaling that Threads is carving out its own distinct audience.

Now, the company is introducing two major features designed to strengthen the community and encourage more meaningful interaction: in-app messaging and the Threads Highlighter, a visual tool that spotlights engaging content.

Direct Messaging Comes to Threads

One of the most requested features since launch, direct messaging (DMs), is finally arriving on Threads. The new functionality allows users to take public conversations private, enabling deeper, one-on-one interactions.

To ensure safety, messaging will initially be limited to mutual followers on Threads or Instagram, and only for users 18 years and older. Meta says it’s rolling out this feature with the same privacy standards and safety infrastructure that support its broader family of apps.

More upgrades to messaging are coming soon, including:

  • Message controls, so users can set who’s allowed to message them — even those who don’t follow them.

  • Group messaging, allowing multiple users to engage in shared conversations.

  • Inbox filters, to help users prioritize and manage conversations more efficiently.

Highlighting the Best of Threads

Also launching is the Threads Highlighter, a new design element that draws attention to noteworthy posts and trending discussions. The feature aims to bring visibility to unique voices and perspectives that drive thoughtful conversations.

Users will see the highlighter appear in areas where they discover content — including trending topics — with more placements expected as the feature expands.

A Platform Coming Into Its Own

As Threads enters its third year, Meta says the focus remains on empowering communities and creators. With a growing user base that’s increasingly distinct from Instagram, Threads is doubling down on features that enhance connection, spotlight new ideas, and nurture an open, positive environment for public dialogue.
