Readwise Launches New Challenger to Kindle and Goodreads

Readwise has introduced Readwise Books, an ebook store and reading app that combines buying, reading and tracking books in one place.

Announced on 28 October 2026, the platform brings together functions associated with Kindle and Goodreads, with a catalogue that Readwise says includes millions of ebooks and titles from all five major trade publishers.

A central feature is automatic reading-session tracking. Alongside recording which books users have started or finished, the app measures time spent reading and words read. Readwise describes the approach as the “Strava of Reading”, drawing a comparison with fitness apps that track individual workouts.

The app also includes social features, highlighting, note-taking and manual tracking for reading completed elsewhere. It supports Android-based e-ink devices, giving readers an alternative to using a phone or tablet.

The launch expands Readwise’s product family to three services. Its original highlights-management app has been renamed Readwise Highlights, while Readwise Reader continues alongside the new Books platform. The company has also introduced separate subscription options for Reader and Highlights, alongside its full bundle.

Readwise Books is listed on the iOS App Store and Google Play but remains in an invite-only beta. Existing Readwise subscribers can access it through their accounts, while other users need an invitation code.

The company plans a wider public release before the end of 2026. Its challenge will be persuading readers that combining a bookstore with detailed reading records offers enough value to change established habits.
