Berlin-based Maritime Tech Startup Accelerates International Expansion with Backing from Motion Ventures and EXMAR
Berlin, Germany – Maritime technology startup Tilla has announced the successful closing of a €2 million funding round, bringing its total capital raised to €4 million since launching in 2021. The round was led by Motion Ventures, a global maritime-focused VC firm that recently unveiled a $100 million fund, with participation from EXMAR, the Belgian gas shipping powerhouse under the Saverys family.
This new investment will fuel Tilla’s international expansion into APAC and Mediterranean markets, accelerate product development, and grow its global team. With Motion Ventures’ industry-specific investment strategy and EXMAR’s operational expertise, Tilla is now positioned to solidify its status as the leading end-to-end crew change management platform for the shipping industry.
Solving a €12 Billion Industry Challenge
Crew changes represent one of the largest and most complex operational costs in maritime logistics, accounting for over $12 billion annually. With ten million crew movements per year, the industry still relies on outdated systems involving emails, spreadsheets, and manual coordination.
Tilla is tackling this inefficiency head-on with an AI-powered digital platform that enables real-time planning, monitoring, and optimization of crew changes. The platform integrates a wide range of data—from voyage schedules and port agents to flight itineraries and visa requirements—and automates processes from flight booking and compliance checks to invoicing and reporting.
Clients have reported cost savings of up to 24% and time savings of up to 40% by switching to Tilla’s digital-first solution.
Trusted by Industry Leaders, Scaled for Global Growth
Tilla is already making waves across the maritime sector, with over 500 vessels using its platform and more than 35,000 crew trips facilitated to date. Customers include major players like Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, Essberger, Wilson, Stödig Shipmanagement, Seatrade, and EXMAR itself.
Niklas Weidmann, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Tilla, emphasized the platform’s ambition:
“Our goal is to optimize every step of every crew change, everywhere in the world. This funding helps us scale faster and more sustainably. With Motion Ventures and EXMAR, we have the perfect partners who bring unmatched maritime expertise and global networks.”
Narayan Venkatesh, Co-Founder and Managing Director, added:
“We’re a tech startup with deep roots in crew logistics. After four years of proven value creation in Europe, it’s time to expand our reach. With this funding, we’re rolling out new AI-powered features, financial capabilities, and broader market access.”
Strategic Backing from Maritime Heavyweights
Motion Ventures sees Tilla as a high-potential disruptor. Anders Vartdal, Senior Investment Associate, said:
“Crew logistics is a hidden cost line in shipping. Tilla’s ability to quickly turn pilots into long-term customers is exceptional. This team is building with and for the industry.”
EXMAR’s endorsement is equally enthusiastic. Ariane Saverys, Deputy COO, noted:
“We’ve seen the real impact of Tilla’s platform within our own operations. This investment is a vote of confidence in their vision and execution.”
