Apple Introduces M4-Powered iPad Air
Apple Inc. has officially unveiled the new iPad Air powered by the M4 chip, delivering a significant performance boost, enhanced AI capabilities, and improved connectivity while maintaining the same starting price as the previous generation.
Announced from Apple Park in Cupertino on 2 March 2026, the updated tablet is designed for students, creators, gamers, and business users seeking powerful performance in a lightweight and versatile device.
The new iPad Air will be available in 11-inch and 13-inch models, with pre-orders beginning 4 March and global availability starting 11 March 2026.
Major Performance Boost with M4 Chip
At the heart of the new device is Apple’s M4 chip, featuring an 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU. According to Apple, the new iPad Air delivers up to 30% faster performance compared to the M3 model and up to 2.3 times faster performance than the M1 version.
The upgraded GPU also introduces second-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, significantly improving graphics performance for gaming, 3D rendering, and creative workflows.
Apple says these enhancements will be particularly noticeable in professional applications such as Final Cut Pro, Pixelmator Pro, and Apple Creator Studio.
Built for the AI Era
The M4 chip also brings improved artificial intelligence performance through a 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple claims is three times faster than the one found in the M1 iPad Air.
Memory has also been increased to 12GB of unified memory, a 50% improvement over the previous generation, along with 120GB/s of memory bandwidth. These upgrades enable faster AI processing for tasks such as photo recognition, transcription, and advanced app features.
Apple says the new capabilities support on-device AI features across apps, including Goodnotes and Onform: Video Analysis App.
Faster Connectivity with New Apple Chips
The device introduces two new Apple-designed connectivity chips: N1 for wireless networking and C1X for cellular connectivity.
The N1 chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, improving network speed and reliability. Meanwhile, the C1X modem offers up to 50% faster cellular data performance and improved energy efficiency.
Cellular models also support 5G connectivity and GPS, making the tablet more capable for travel, navigation, and remote work.
iPadOS 26 Brings New Productivity Features
The new hardware arrives alongside iPadOS 26, which introduces a redesigned interface and several productivity improvements.
Among the major features is a new windowing system that allows users to organize and switch between multiple apps more efficiently. A redesigned Files app, customizable folders, and a new menu bar further enhance multitasking.
Apple also introduced a dedicated Preview app for viewing and editing PDFs and images, as well as new capabilities such as improved audio control, background tasks, and high-quality local recordings.
Accessories Expand Productivity
The new iPad Air supports the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB‑C), enabling users to sketch, take notes, and create digital artwork.
It is also compatible with the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, which features a built-in trackpad, a 14-key function row, and a floating magnetic design for improved typing and productivity.

-
$599 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model
