WhatsApp Rolls Out Passkey-Encrypted Chat Backups

A new era of backup protection
WhatsApp is taking chat security to the next level with the introduction of passkey-encrypted chat backups, allowing users to secure their conversations using familiar authentication methods such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or screen lock codes.

A first in private messaging
Over four years ago, WhatsApp became the first private messaging service to launch end-to-end encrypted backups, ensuring that even backups stored in the cloud couldn’t be accessed by anyone — not even WhatsApp itself. The new passkey system builds on that legacy, making it easier than ever for users to keep their memories and messages private.

No more passwords or 64-digit keys
With passkeys, users won’t need to remember complex passwords or manually store lengthy encryption keys. Instead, authentication happens seamlessly through a device’s built-in security features — a simple tap or glance is all it takes to safeguard chat histories.

Gradual rollout worldwide
WhatsApp says the new passkey feature will roll out gradually in the coming weeks and months. To enable it, users can head to Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → End-to-end Encrypted Backup to explore the new options.

Commitment to privacy continues
“Your chats on WhatsApp carry some of your most important memories,”

the company said in a statement. “That’s why we continue to find new ways to prioritize your security.”

With this latest update, WhatsApp strengthens its position as a global leader in private messaging — ensuring that even your backups remain yours alone.
