Uber Highlights Safety Features Protecting Riders and Drivers

Uber Reinforces Commitment to Safer E-Hailing

As concerns around personal safety continue to influence how South Africans travel, Uber has outlined the range of safety features and verification tools available to both riders and drivers, reinforcing its commitment to making every trip as secure as possible.

The company says safety is embedded throughout the entire journey, from the moment users sign up for the platform to the completion of every trip, with technology, verification systems and emergency response services working together to protect everyone using the app.

Safety Begins Before a Trip Is Requested

According to Uber, safety starts long before a vehicle arrives.

Prospective drivers are required to complete criminal background checks, driving assessments and vehicle inspections before they can begin accepting trips. These safeguards continue throughout their time on the platform through recurring identity verification using live selfie checks, random identity confirmations while online and regular vehicle inspections.

Riders are also subject to identity verification before they can request trips, ensuring that both parties undergo multiple verification checks before being matched.

Riders Encouraged to Verify Every Vehicle

Uber is reminding customers that legitimate rides can only be requested through the app, particularly at busy locations such as airports, concerts and sporting events where passengers may be approached by unauthorised individuals.

Before entering a vehicle, riders are encouraged to verify the driver’s name, photograph, vehicle make, colour and licence plate displayed in the app. For additional peace of mind, users can activate PIN Verification, requiring drivers to enter a unique four-digit code before a trip can begin.

In-App Safety Tools Operate Throughout Every Journey

Several safety features activate automatically once a trip starts.

RideCheck monitors trips using GPS and sensor technology to detect unusual events such as unexpected stops, significant route deviations or journeys that continue longer than expected. If anything appears out of the ordinary, both riders and drivers receive alerts with options to request assistance, while Uber’s support team may also intervene.

The platform also issues seatbelt reminders before trips begin, while audio recording functionality can help document interactions if disputes arise. Drivers also have the option of installing dashboard cameras to provide visual evidence should incidents occur.

After every journey, riders and drivers can report inappropriate behaviour directly through the app for investigation.

Keeping Friends and Family Informed

Uber also encourages users to make use of its trip-sharing tools.

The Share My Trip feature allows riders to send a live tracking link containing the driver’s details, route and estimated arrival time to trusted friends or family members.

For frequent travellers, the Trusted Contacts feature enables users to automatically notify up to five contacts whenever they begin a trip.

Safety Measures Protect Drivers Too

While public conversations often focus on passenger safety, Uber says drivers face their own challenges, including late-night shifts, unfamiliar neighbourhoods and difficult passenger interactions.

To improve accountability, both riders and drivers rate each other after every trip. Riders who consistently receive poor ratings can be reviewed and potentially removed from the platform.

The company also protects user privacy through phone number and address anonymisation, preventing either party from accessing each other’s personal contact information.

Additional safeguards include mandatory driving hour limits aimed at reducing fatigue, alongside real-time speed limit alerts that notify drivers when they exceed speed limits.

Emergency Assistance Available Through AURA Partnership

In emergencies, Uber users can access assistance directly from the app using the Emergency Assistance feature found within the Safety Toolkit.

In South Africa, Uber has partnered with AURA to connect riders, drivers and delivery partners with emergency support.

Through the in-app feature, users can request assistance during medical emergencies, security incidents such as robberies or hijackings, or roadside emergencies following breakdowns or collisions. Live location information is shared with AURA’s control room to help coordinate private security or medical responders as quickly as possible.

Safety Remains a Key Reason South Africans Choose Uber

Uber says its latest South Africa Economic Impact Report highlights the importance of safe transport in everyday life.

According to the report, more than 76% of riders believe it would be difficult to find a safe way home at night without ridesharing services. Among women surveyed, 83% identified safety as a primary reason for choosing Uber, while 81% said they consider it the safest option for travelling home after dark.

The findings underscore the growing role e-hailing services play in helping South Africans travel with greater confidence.

Shared Responsibility at the Heart of Safer Travel

Uber concludes that while technology is central to improving safety, creating a secure transport ecosystem requires participation from everyone involved.

By making use of available safety features, reporting concerns and providing honest feedback after every trip, both riders and drivers contribute to a safer experience for the wider community.
