Apple Marks Major Climate Milestone with 60% Emissions Reduction

Apple announced a significant environmental achievement, revealing that it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% compared to 2015 levels. This progress brings the company closer to meeting its Apple 2030 goal — to become carbon neutral across its entire business footprint within the next five years.

The milestone was detailed in Apple’s annual Environmental Progress Report, which outlines sweeping advancements in clean energy adoption, material recycling, and climate-conscious manufacturing.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration, and urgency.”

Scaling Clean Energy and Cutting Supply Chain Emissions

A key pillar of Apple’s climate strategy is transforming its global supply chain. The company now boasts 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity in its supply chain, thanks to a growing network of suppliers committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2030. These efforts helped avoid 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024 alone — a 17% increase from the previous year.

Further progress includes a push for cleaner semiconductor production, where 26 of Apple’s direct chip suppliers have pledged to cut at least 90% of potent fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs) from their operations by 2030.

Products Built with Recycled and Responsible Materials

Apple also reported groundbreaking advances in sustainable product design. Earlier this year, it surpassed 99% of its 2025 goal to use 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries. Magnets and batteries are among the most carbon-intensive components in Apple products, making this a major step forward.

The new MacBook Air — made with over 55% recycled materials — is the most eco-friendly product Apple has ever produced. The company’s lineup now also includes carbon neutral versions of the Mac mini and all Apple Watch models.

Reducing Waste and Saving Water

Since the launch of its Zero Waste Program in 2015, Apple’s suppliers have diverted 3.6 million metric tons of waste from landfills — the equivalent of freeing up 4.5 million square meters of landfill space. In 2024 alone, about 600,000 metric tons of waste were redirected.

Meanwhile, Apple’s Supplier Clean Water Program has saved over 90 billion gallons of freshwater since 2013. In 2024, the initiative saved 14 billion gallons across facilities, while new partnerships are expected to restore nearly 9 billion gallons more over the next two decades in regions such as the U.S., India, and Africa.

Celebrating Earth Day with Global Initiatives

To honor Earth Day, Apple is rolling out interactive and educational experiences across its platforms. Apple Watch users can earn a special Earth Day badge by completing a 30-minute workout, and Apple Fitness+ is offering curated content including a new “Time to Walk” episode with actress and climate advocate Shailene Woodley.

On the Apple TV app, a curated Earth Day collection titled The Future Is Up to Us highlights environmental stories through family-friendly films, nature documentaries, and award-winning Apple Originals like Jane and Earth at Night in Color.

Apple users can also explore new sustainability tips in the Tips app, from identifying plants with iPhone’s Photos app to saving electricity at home.
