South African fintech company Kuunda has completed a $5 million secondary share sale led by E4E Africa, providing returns to early investors while strengthening its long-term shareholder base.
Announced on 13 October 2026, the transaction also saw existing investors Accion Ventures, Portugal Gateway Fund and Seedstars Africa Ventures increase their stakes in the digital lending infrastructure business.
Early Investors Receive Returns
The deal involves the purchase of existing shareholders’ stakes, allowing early backers to realise returns on their investment. It should therefore be distinguished from a funding round in which a company issues new shares to raise money for its operations.
Kuunda said the transaction demonstrates how African fintech businesses can provide liquidity to shareholders before a stock market listing or acquisition. E4E Africa’s increased holding also strengthens its position as a long-term investor in the company.
Building Credit Access Through Digital Platforms
Founded in 2018, Kuunda supplies lending infrastructure to businesses including banks, mobile money operators, point-of-sale networks and e-commerce platforms.
Its model embeds credit services into channels customers already use, helping agents, merchants and consumers access financing through established distribution networks. The company uses data-driven credit scoring to support lending in emerging markets.
Its products include Hapa Cash, which provides short-term liquidity for transaction-related needs, and Kazi Cash, which offers financing options such as stock funding and merchant cash advances.
The approach enables Kuunda to expand through partners while helping financial institutions serve customers whose borrowing needs may fall outside conventional lending products.
Expansion Across African Markets
According to Kuunda, its infrastructure has supported more than 870 million loans, delivering over $4.4 billion in credit to 14.6 million agents, merchants and consumers.
The company operates in five markets and has plans to launch in seven more. E4E Africa managing partner Bas Hochstenbach said its combination of technology, distribution and banking partnerships helps extend financial services to underserved customers.
The transaction follows Kuunda’s $7.5 million pre-Series A funding round in October 2025, which included participation from E4E Africa, Portugal Gateway Fund, Seedstars Africa Ventures, 4Di Capital, Accion Ventures and Nedbank.
