TikTok South Africa has launched an in-app election information centre in partnership with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), giving users access to official guidance ahead of the country’s local government elections.
Connecting Users With Official Information
According to ITWeb, the centre provides information about key election dates, voting and the electoral process. Election-related labels and search banners direct users to the resource from within TikTok.
IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the initiative aims to support informed participation by making trusted electoral information easier to access on digital platforms.
Helping Users Recognise AI-Generated Content
The centre also links to an AI media literacy hub, which offers guidance on identifying AI-generated content and using the technology responsibly.
The educational component forms part of the initiative’s effort to help users navigate misinformation while accessing election information.
Political Advertising Restrictions Remain
TikTok continues to prohibit paid political advertising. However, official election management bodies may run advertisements containing essential voter information, including registration guidance and polling details.
The launch brings electoral information into an app where South Africans already encounter news, commentary and public debate.
