OpenAI has expanded its cybersecurity initiative, Daybreak, with the launch of GPT-5.6-Cyber, a specialised AI model designed to help authorised cybersecurity professionals identify vulnerabilities, validate exploits and strengthen digital systems before attackers can take advantage of them.

The announcement comes as artificial intelligence is increasingly being used on both sides of the cybersecurity battlefield, with increasingly capable AI systems able to automate parts of the attack and defence process.

OpenAI says its latest model is specifically designed for advanced, authorised cybersecurity work, rather than general-purpose AI use.

From Finding Vulnerabilities to Helping Defenders Act

The launch builds on OpenAI’s broader Daybreak programme, which brings together frontier AI models and cybersecurity tools to help organisations discover and address software vulnerabilities.

The company has previously positioned Daybreak around moving cybersecurity from a largely reactive process — where vulnerabilities are discovered and patched after the fact — towards a more proactive approach.

Its tools can assist security teams with vulnerability research, exploit validation and remediation workflows.

The latest expansion gives trusted cybersecurity organisations access to more capable and more permissive models for defensive security work. OpenAI says access is intended for authorised use and governed environments.
