New feature offers an additional way to regain access to Google Accounts
Google has introduced a new selfie video sign-in option designed to make it easier for users to regain access to their accounts if they become locked out or lose access to their usual devices.
The feature adds another layer to Google’s account recovery tools, giving users more flexibility alongside existing options such as passkeys and recovery contacts.
How selfie video works
Setting up the feature requires users to record a short selfie video using their device’s camera. During the setup process, users are guided through a series of simple head movements, allowing the system to capture multiple angles of their face.
If users later need to recover access to their account, they simply record another selfie video. Google’s system compares the new recording with the original video to verify the user’s identity before granting access.
The company says the process is designed to be quick and straightforward while providing an additional recovery method when traditional sign-in options are unavailable.
Privacy and security remain a priority
Google emphasised that privacy is central to the new feature. Selfie videos are recorded only with the user’s consent and are securely stored within their Google Account. Users can delete their stored selfie video at any time.
The company also noted that selfie videos are encrypted while stored and are used solely for account sign-in unless users explicitly choose to share them for additional purposes.
To guard against identity fraud, Google’s authentication system incorporates multiple security measures aimed at detecting fake images and AI-generated deepfakes. Users are required to perform live movements during verification, helping the system distinguish genuine users from impersonation attempts.
In addition, Google’s existing security systems continue to monitor for suspicious sign-in activity to further protect user accounts.
Expanding account security options
The launch of selfie video sign-in forms part of Google’s broader effort to provide more secure and convenient authentication methods. It complements existing security features such as passkeys, recovery contacts and other account recovery options.
