Meta’s Apps Reach Record Engagement During 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become more than just the world’s biggest sporting event—it has also delivered one of the largest moments in Meta’s history. Across WhatsApp, Instagram, Threads and Facebook, billions of interactions, record-breaking messaging volumes and unprecedented audience growth highlighted how football fans turned to Meta’s platforms to celebrate every moment of the tournament.

WhatsApp Sets New Messaging Record

WhatsApp recorded its highest-ever messaging activity during the tournament, underlining the global excitement surrounding the competition.

During the Round of 16 clash between Argentina and Egypt, the platform processed more than 29 million messages per second, surpassing the previous record set during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. The record was then broken again during the 2026 final, with WhatsApp reaching over 30 million messages per second, marking a new all-time high for the messaging service.

Instagram Delivers Massive Growth for Football Stars

The tournament also proved to be a major audience growth engine for footballers.

Between June 11 and July 11, players selected in the final tournament squads collectively gained 213.6 million new activated followers on Instagram—a 6.6% increase. Combined player followings climbed from 3.26 billion to 3.47 billion during the month-long period.

The surge reflects the growing role social media plays in connecting athletes directly with supporters during major sporting events.

Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha Emerges as Tournament’s Biggest Social Media Sensation

One of the tournament’s most remarkable success stories belonged to Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha.

The shot-stopper experienced one of the fastest follower surges ever seen on Instagram, growing from just 37,000 followers before the tournament to 28.8 million by its conclusion—an extraordinary increase of nearly 77,000%.

His breakout performances also helped propel Cape Verde to the top of Meta’s national growth rankings, with the country’s squad collectively adding 32.1 million followers, representing a team-wide increase of approximately 2,000%.

Football’s Biggest Names Continue to Dominate

While new stars emerged, established football icons continued to expand their already enormous global audiences.

Norway’s Erling Haaland added 23 million followers, nearly doubling his existing fan base during the competition.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, already the most-followed individual on Instagram, attracted another 10 million followers, pushing his audience to a record 676 million.

According to Instagram’s Your Algorithm feature, the five players most frequently appearing in the recommendations of U.S. users throughout the tournament were:

  • Lionel Messi
  • Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Erling Haaland
  • Kylian Mbappé
  • Jude Bellingham

Young Talent Captures Global Attention

Several emerging stars also used the World Cup stage to rapidly expand their digital audiences.

Among the standout performers were:

  • Endrick, who gained 5.2 million followers
  • Jude Bellingham, adding 4.2 million
  • Michael Olise, with 4 million new followers
  • Lamine Yamal, gaining 3 million
  • Vinicius Jr, adding 2.8 million

Meta said the tournament demonstrated how global sporting events continue to accelerate athlete visibility beyond the football pitch.

Mexico Leads National Audience Growth

Among football nations, Mexico recorded one of the strongest performances on Instagram, growing its national player audience by 78%, driven by breakout stars Gilberto Mora and Julian Quiñones.

Brazil added 26 million followers across its squad, powered by Neymar, Endrick and Vinicius Jr, while Argentina gained 18.4 million, with Lionel Messi continuing to generate significant global interest.

Japan also posted impressive growth with a 42% increase, while co-hosts the United States and Canada experienced steady audience gains throughout the tournament.

Threads and Facebook Become Football Conversation Hubs

The football conversation extended well beyond Instagram.

Meta revealed that posts tagged with tournament-related content on Threads generated 1.5 billion impressions, with football discussions reaching around 15 million people daily, peaking at 25 million users on July 6.

On Facebook, fans published more than 80 million posts mentioning the World Cup, illustrating the scale of conversation taking place across the platform.

Meta Positions Itself at the Centre of Football Culture

Meta says the tournament showcased how its family of apps has become the digital destination for football fans seeking highlights, behind-the-scenes moments, analysis and community conversations beyond the 90 minutes of play.

“This summer we set out to make Meta the cultural epicenter of the beautiful game – and thanks to our features and content the real winners were the fans,” said Rob Pilgrim, Global Football Lead at Meta. “While fans watch the 90 minutes on TV, they come to our apps for everything around it—the community, the conversation, the clips and memes they love to share and debate.”

With record-breaking engagement across WhatsApp, Instagram, Threads and Facebook, the 2026 World Cup has reinforced social media’s increasingly central role in how billions of fans experience football’s biggest moments.
