In a move set to reshape South Africa’s payment landscape, Apple Inc. has officially launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in the country, enabling merchants to accept contactless payments directly from their iPhones — without the need for additional hardware.
Turning iPhones into Payment Terminals
The new feature allows businesses to use an iPhone (from iPhone Xs and newer) as a fully functional payment terminal. By leveraging near-field communication (NFC) technology, merchants can accept payments simply by prompting customers to tap their card, smartphone, or wearable device against the iPhone.
This includes payments made via:
- Contactless debit and credit cards
- Digital wallets such as Apple Pay
- Other NFC-enabled payment methods
The entire process is completed securely and instantly, streamlining checkout experiences for both merchants and customers.
Local Partners Lead the Rollout
At launch, South African fintech platforms Yoco and iStore Pay are the first to integrate Tap to Pay on iPhone into their systems.
This partnership enables businesses of all sizes — from informal traders to established retailers — to start accepting contactless payments using only a compatible iPhone and a supported iOS app.
Apple has indicated that more payment platforms and developers are expected to join the ecosystem over time, expanding access and functionality across the market.
Broad Payment Network Support
Tap to Pay on iPhone supports major global payment networks, including:
- Visa
- Mastercard
Support for American Express is expected to roll out soon, further broadening the range of accepted payment options.
Built with Privacy and Security at Its Core
Apple emphasised that privacy remains central to the feature’s design. Transactions are encrypted and processed using the device’s Secure Element — the same technology underpinning Apple Pay.
Importantly:
- Apple does not store card numbers or transaction data
- The company cannot see what is being purchased or who is making the purchase
- Payment data remains protected and private for both merchants and customers
This approach reinforces Apple’s longstanding positioning around user privacy in financial services.
A Boost for South African Businesses
The introduction of Tap to Pay on iPhone could significantly lower the barrier to entry for digital payments in South Africa. By eliminating the need for dedicated card machines, small businesses and mobile entrepreneurs can now accept contactless payments more easily and affordably.
