San Francisco–based AI startup Quill has secured $6.5 million in seed funding to launch what it calls a “sovereign Chief of AI Staff” — an AI system designed to coordinate a user’s digital tools while keeping sensitive data fully under their control.
The company’s flagship product, Quilliam, aims to act as a centralized intelligence layer across meetings, documents, and productivity platforms, positioning itself as more than just another AI assistant.
A New Layer of AI Management
Unlike traditional AI copilots that operate in isolation, Quilliam is designed to sit across a professional’s workflow. It captures meeting context, understands ongoing projects, and coordinates actions across tools such as task managers, CRM systems, and collaboration platforms.
The goal is to create an AI that doesn’t just respond to prompts, but proactively manages tasks — summarizing meetings, preparing briefings, updating documents, and tracking follow-ups based on real-time context.

A Strong Emphasis on Data Sovereignty
What sets Quill apart in an increasingly crowded AI market is its focus on data sovereignty.
The company says user data remains on-device by default, with customers able to choose where processing occurs — whether locally, within private cloud infrastructure, or inside enterprise environments. Importantly, Quill states that user data is not used to train external AI models without explicit permission.
This positioning is aimed at enterprises, executives, and professionals operating in regulated sectors where privacy, compliance, and confidentiality are non-negotiable.
Backed by Prominent Investors
The seed round was led by Basis Set Ventures, with participation from 500 Global, Naval Ravikant, Morado Ventures, and AME Cloud Ventures.
The funding will be used to expand engineering capabilities, enhance enterprise-grade features, and scale product development as demand for secure AI infrastructure grows.
Entering the Agentic AI Era
Quill’s launch comes at a time when the AI industry is shifting toward “agentic” systems — tools that can act autonomously across multiple applications rather than responding to isolated commands.
By combining contextual awareness with strict privacy controls, Quill is betting that the next wave of AI adoption will be driven not only by intelligence, but by trust.
