Google has officially launched Android 17, marking one of the company’s most significant mobile software updates in recent years. The new operating system is rolling out first to compatible Pixel devices, with support for additional Android smartphones from manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, Honor and others expected throughout 2026.
The update places a strong focus on artificial intelligence, productivity, security and content creation, as Google continues its push to transform Android into what it describes as an “intelligence system” powered by Gemini AI.
Among the headline features is a new multitasking tool called Bubbles, which allows users to turn apps into floating windows that can remain accessible while working in other applications. On foldable devices and tablets, these floating apps can be organized within a dedicated Bubble Bar for easier navigation and productivity.
Content creators are also set to benefit from Android 17’s new Screen Reactions feature, enabling users to record their screen while simultaneously capturing video from the front-facing camera. The tool is designed to simplify the creation of reaction videos, tutorials and social media content without the need for additional editing software.
Gaming receives notable upgrades as well, particularly for foldable devices. Android 17 introduces a dedicated gaming mode that utilizes a split-screen layout, displaying gameplay on one section of the screen while offering touch controls on the other. The update also includes controller remapping capabilities and performance optimizations aimed at reducing frame drops and improving responsiveness.
Security and privacy enhancements remain a major focus. Android 17 allows users to grant temporary location access to apps, share selected contacts instead of an entire address book, and take advantage of stronger anti-theft protections. Google’s upgraded “Mark as Lost” feature can lock a missing device while maintaining tracking functionality, while improvements to Live Threat Detection aim to better protect users from scams and malicious software.
Under the hood, Google says Android 17 introduces smarter memory management designed to improve battery life and overall device performance by preventing apps from consuming excessive system resources. Additional updates include expanded parental controls, enhanced dark mode customization and the option to hide app names on the home screen.
While Android 17 is available immediately for Pixel 6 devices and newer, Google has confirmed that additional AI-powered Gemini Intelligence features will arrive later this year on select premium Android devices. These tools are expected to include advanced task automation, AI-generated widgets and more personalized digital assistance.
