Galaxy Z Flip7 Review

A Smarter Companion That Fits in Your Pocket

I’ve always liked phones that adapt to how I live — not the other way around. The Galaxy Z Flip7 feels like that kind of companion. It’s small enough to slide into a cycling pocket or the front of a sling bag, yet clever enough to feel like a personal assistant. I’ve spent a few weeks with it across quiet outdoor spaces and busy urban settings, and what stands out isn’t just how compact it is, but how much smarter it feels compared to last year’s Flip6.

A Bigger, Brighter FlexWindow That Finally Feels Useful

The first thing you notice is the cover screen. It’s now 4.1 inches, stretching edge-to-edge with 120Hz refresh rate and 2,600 nits brightness. That’s a big step up from the 3.4-inch, 60Hz panel on the Flip6.

Outdoors, the difference is obvious. Even in bright sunlight, the Vision Booster feature keeps everything crisp — from checking messages to framing a quick selfie. You can respond to notifications, type short replies, and glance at widgets without unfolding. It’s like carrying a mini dashboard that’s always awake.

A new “Now Bar” quietly updates in the background — showing small but useful things: your music playback, how far away your rideshare is, or even the score of a football match. It’s subtle, and that’s the point — information that helps, not distracts.

Everyday AI That Actually Feels Personal

Samsung has leaned hard into AI this year — and it shows.
The Flip7 runs Android 16 with One UI 8, bringing Galaxy AI front and center. Voice interactions are smoother, and the new Gemini Live assistant lives right on the cover screen. You can ask it to set reminders, check flight details, or suggest nearby restaurants — without unfolding the phone.

For example, while planning a weekend trip, I asked Gemini to pull up my booking, find a café en route, and note my check-in time — all from the FlexWindow. It feels less like a gimmick and more like a tiny, helpful companion.

Compared to the Flip6, which had early Galaxy AI tools like Circle to Search and Live Translate, the Flip7 feels more conversational and hands-on. The AI-powered personalisation also makes the interface feel alive — wallpapers, widgets, and even the clock shift gently to match your photos and mood.

More Power, Longer Life, Same Portability

Despite being slimmer (13.7mm folded vs. 14.9mm on Flip6), the Flip7 carries a larger 4,300mAh battery — the biggest yet in a Flip. You’ll easily get through a full day with mixed use, even with the always-on cover screen.

Performance is solid, too. The new Exynos 2500 (3nm) chip replaces Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from last year. It’s efficient, snappy, and manages heat well. And for the first time, Samsung DeX works on the Flip — open it up, plug into a screen, and you’ve got a lightweight workstation.

Pocket-Sized Selfie Studio

Samsung’s ProVisual Engine does its usual magic — with the same 50MP + 12MP dual rear cameras as the Flip6, but smarter processing. Low-light shots look cleaner, and selfies straight from the cover screen are sharper with real-time filters and a new Zoom Slider. You can preview yourself and frame group shots perfectly without unfolding. For quick moments, that convenience matters more than megapixels.

Build, Feel, and Durability

It’s still the most pocketable flagship you’ll find. The hinge feels firmer and thinner, and the phone’s wrapped in Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with an Armor Aluminum frame. The IP48 rating means splash protection, though not a swim.

Despite the refinements, it remains light — 188g, nearly identical to the Flip6. It slides easily into any pocket and disappears until you need it.

Subtle Intelligence Over Flashy Features

What I like most is how Samsung stopped trying to make the Flip a novelty. The Z Flip7 feels considered — like the company finally figured out that small screens should be smart, not busy. The FlexWindow is now genuinely useful; the AI tools actually save time; and the design doesn’t shout for attention — it just works.

The Flip6 was a solid phone with the basics done well. But the Flip7 feels more complete — smoother to use, brighter outside, and smarter in small ways that add up.

Verdict

The Galaxy Z Flip7 is not just a foldable; it’s a lifestyle phone — ideal if you value portability, design, and practical AI.
If you already own a Flip6 and mostly use it unfolded, you might not need to rush. But if you live off the cover screen or travel often, this is the first Flip that feels indispensable.

Pros:
✅ Brighter, bigger cover screen
✅ AI tasks directly on FlexWindow
✅ DeX support for productivity
✅ Longer battery life
✅ Sleeker design

Cons:
⚠️ Price bump
⚠️ No major camera hardware jump

💰 From R24,999 (256GB)
Rating: 9/10 — A foldable that’s matured gracefully.
