Apple Unveils Final Cut Camera 2.0

Apple announced Final Cut Camera 2.0, a major update to its professional video recording app, introducing ProRes RAW and genlock support for the new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The update marks the first time smartphones can capture ProRes RAW footage, a breakthrough that brings cinema-grade tools directly into the hands of filmmakers, content creators, and journalists.

Available for free on the App Store, Final Cut Camera transforms iPhone into a powerful filmmaking tool with manual controls for white balance, focus, and now a host of advanced features.

ProRes RAW on iPhone: A First in Mobile Filmmaking

Final Cut Camera 2.0 unlocks the ability to record pristine RAW data straight from the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera sensor, giving editors maximum flexibility in post-production. With open gate recording, users can capture the full sensor area at resolutions above DCI 4K, enabling re-framing, stabilization, and aspect ratio adjustments without loss of quality.

Apple says the ProRes RAW workflow, powered by the Media Engine in Apple silicon, delivers the flexibility of RAW with the speed and efficiency of ProRes — resulting in faster exports and smaller, more manageable files compared to traditional RAW formats. Upcoming updates to Final Cut Pro 11.2 on Mac and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3 will include fine-tuned editing controls for iPhone ProRes RAW, such as exposure, color temperature, tint, and demosaicing.

Frame-Perfect Sync with Genlock

Another professional-grade addition is genlock support, enabling iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to synchronize perfectly with other recording devices to a common reference signal. This ensures every frame matches across multiple cameras, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual alignment. Apple has also opened genlock APIs to third parties, with Blackmagic Design already integrating support into its new Camera ProDock.

A New Front Camera Experience

Final Cut Camera 2.0 also takes advantage of the new Center Stage front camera, now available across the iPhone 17 family. Featuring the first square front-facing sensor on iPhone with a wider field of view and higher resolution, it allows creators to shoot in horizontal or vertical orientation without rotating the device — enhancing flexibility for vlogs, interviews, and social content.

More Features for Professionals

The update also introduces:

  • Apple Log 2 support for a wider color gamut in ProRes or HEVC on iPhone 17 Pro.

  • Timecode options (Time of Day, Record Run, or external timecode) for easier footage management.

  • 200 mm Telephoto recording in ProRes up to 4K60 fps on iPhone 17 Pro.

Availability

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available later this month as a free download or update on the App Store. It requires iPhone Xs or later running iOS 18.6 or later, with advanced features such as ProRes RAW and genlock limited to iPhone 17 Pro models.
