Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) has announced the expansion of its Miraisha Programme in Nigeria, deepening its collaboration with Kings and Queens Art Academy to empower youth in the communities of Bariga and Makoko, Lagos. The initiative aims to equip 120 young people with professional photography and filmmaking skills, helping to build pathways into the creative industry.
The programme’s growth marks a significant milestone in Canon’s mission to support youth through skills development across Africa. In 2024, 100 students in Bariga benefitted from the same initiative.
This year, the reach has been extended to Makoko—one of Africa’s largest informal settlements—reflecting Canon’s commitment to inclusive access to education.
Canon’s Miraisha Programme, inspired by the company’s corporate philosophy of “Kyosei” (living and working together for the common good), will deliver four week-long intensive workshops from March through April.
Hosted at the Kings and Queens Art Academy in Bariga, the workshops combine theoretical and practical training, outdoor photography sessions, and storytelling techniques. Participants will receive certification upon completion, equipping them for real-world opportunities in the creative sector.
“As an organisation that places great emphasis on people and social impact, we’re proud to continue empowering Africa’s youth through the Miraisha Programme,”
said Somesh Adukia, Managing Director of Canon Central and North Africa.
“Working again with Kings and Queens Art Academy allows us to reach vulnerable youth in their own communities using local expertise.”
The programme’s success is already evident—four participants from the 2024 cohort earned scholarships to study at the prestigious PEFTI Film Institute in Lagos.
This year’s expanded enrolment, with a focus on gender balance, further strengthens Canon’s long-term commitment to nurturing talent and promoting diversity in the creative arts.
Founded in 2013, Kings and Queens Art Academy is a cultural beacon in Bariga, known for championing African heritage and youth empowerment through art.
“We are proud to partner with Canon once again,”
said Adewale Ayodeji, the Academy’s Founder and Director.
“This collaboration continues to transform lives, opening new doors for young people in Bariga and Makoko.”
Canon’s ongoing investment in creative training not only uplifts individual lives but also contributes to the growth of Nigeria’s vibrant creative industry—cementing its role as a leader in youth empowerment and community development.
