Canon Deepens Apple Collaboration to Expand 3D VR

Canon Inc. has announced a major expansion in its support for immersive 3D content creation, revealing that two of its RF lenses — the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and the RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE — will now offer compatibility with the “Apple Projected Media Profile” (APMP). APMP is a new QuickTime movie profile optimized for the Apple Vision Pro, Apple Inc.’s cutting-edge spatial computer.

This announcement marks another step in Canon’s strategic alignment with Apple, as the tech giant continues to push the boundaries of immersive media experiences. APMP will be natively supported on visionOS 26, Apple’s upcoming operating system for the Vision Pro, which was officially announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, 2025.

Seamless Integration with Canon’s EOS VR System

Canon introduced the EOS VR System in 2021 to support professional-grade VR video across industries like entertainment, tourism, and education. With the recent updates, Canon continues to evolve the system to match the demands of the growing spatial media space. The EOS VR Utility app will allow users to convert footage shot on the compatible RF lenses into APMP format, simplifying the workflow for Apple Vision Pro users.

Canon’s two supported lenses — the professional RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and the compact RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE — will now offer a streamlined path for creators to develop high-quality, stereoscopic 3D content ready for native playback on the Vision Pro headset.

Introducing Support for Spatial Photo and Spatial Video

Canon also unveiled future updates to its RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens, which was released in November 2024 and is designed for recording “spatial video” — a form of 3D video with depth perception tailored for Vision Pro. The upcoming software and firmware updates will expand this lens’s functionality to include “spatial photo,” allowing for the capture of immersive 3D still images.

These spatial media capabilities will be supported on Canon’s EOS R7 mirrorless camera (released in 2022) and the new EOS R50 V (released in May 2025). The original EOS R50, which debuted in March 2023, will also receive a firmware update in mid-July 2025 to enable full compatibility with the EOS VR System.

A Growing Vision for Immersive Storytelling

With immersive media becoming a frontier of digital storytelling, Canon’s partnership with Apple represents a concerted effort to deliver professional tools for creators ready to explore spatial formats. By fusing Canon’s advanced optical technologies with Apple’s visionOS platform, the companies aim to simplify content creation for VR filmmakers, educators, and digital artists.

Canon confirms that it will continue strengthening its EOS VR System and expanding its spatial media offerings through ongoing collaboration with Apple — a move that reinforces both companies’ commitment to innovation in the rapidly evolving 3D and VR content space.
