Meta Doubles Down on Teen Protection Measures
Meta has announced a major expansion of its AI-driven safety systems aimed at protecting teenagers and removing underage users from its platforms. The company says it is strengthening enforcement measures across Instagram and Facebook by using advanced artificial intelligence to identify users who may be younger than 13 — the minimum age requirement for both services.
The latest update forms part of Meta’s broader push to create safer digital environments for teens through its Teen Accounts system, which automatically places young users into age-appropriate experiences with built-in protections.
AI Technology Now Scans for Age Clues Beyond Birthdays
Meta revealed that its AI systems are now capable of analyzing a user’s entire profile for contextual indicators that may suggest they are underage. This includes clues found in posts, captions, bios, comments, and interactions.
The company says the AI can detect signals such as birthday celebrations, references to school grades, and other behavioral patterns associated with younger users. These systems are also being expanded into more areas of Meta’s ecosystem, including Instagram Reels, Instagram Live, and Facebook Groups.
If Meta suspects an account belongs to someone under 13, the account may be deactivated unless the user can successfully verify their age.
New Visual Analysis Tools Introduced
One of the most significant additions is the rollout of AI-powered visual analysis technology. According to Meta, the system can assess visual cues in photos and videos — including factors such as height and bone structure — to estimate a person’s age range.
The company stressed that this technology is not facial recognition and does not attempt to identify individuals. Instead, it evaluates general age-related characteristics to help improve detection accuracy.
Meta believes combining visual analysis with text and behavioral signals will significantly improve its ability to identify underage users attempting to bypass platform rules.
Teen Account Protections Expanding Globally
Meta also announced that it is expanding automatic Teen Account protections to users it suspects may actually be teenagers despite listing adult birthdays on their profiles.
The rollout will include Instagram users in the European Union and Brazil, as well as Facebook users in the United States. These protections are designed to limit unwanted contact, restrict exposure to sensitive content, and provide safer default settings for younger users.
The company previously introduced Teen Accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger with stricter privacy and safety settings automatically enabled.
Parents Encouraged to Discuss Online Age Honesty
As part of the initiative, Meta says it will also provide parents with guidance and conversation tips to help teens understand the importance of using their real age online.
The company noted that accurately identifying age online remains a major industry-wide challenge, which is why it continues investing heavily in age assurance technologies and AI moderation systems.
Faster Reporting and Enforcement Measures
Meta is also simplifying the process for users to report suspected underage accounts. Reporting flows inside the apps and within Meta’s Help Center have been redesigned to make reporting quicker and easier.
To improve consistency and speed, AI models are now being used alongside human moderation teams to review reports. Meta claims early testing shows the AI-assisted system delivers faster and more accurate decisions than relying on human review alone.
In addition, the company says it is strengthening anti-circumvention measures to stop users believed to be underage from repeatedly creating new accounts after removal.
Broader Rollout Still in Progress
While many of Meta’s AI enforcement tools are already operating globally, some of the more advanced features — including visual age analysis — are currently limited to select countries as the company prepares for a wider international rollout.
