French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI has secured a massive €1.7 billion Series C funding round, achieving a post-money valuation of €11.7 billion and solidifying its status as Europe’s most valuable AI company. The milestone marks a significant moment for the continent’s ambitions to build globally competitive AI technology independent of U.S. and Chinese tech giants.
The funding round was led by Dutch semiconductor giant ASML, which invested approximately €1.3 billion and became Mistral’s largest shareholder with an 11% stake in the company. Existing investors including NVIDIA, Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, DST Global and Bpifrance also participated in the round.
Founded in 2023 by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta AI, Mistral AI has rapidly emerged as Europe’s strongest challenger to companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The Paris-based company develops large language models and enterprise AI solutions, while also championing an open-weight approach that has gained significant traction among developers and businesses worldwide.
The fresh capital will be used to accelerate frontier AI research, expand computing infrastructure, and develop AI technologies for strategic industries across Europe. Mistral has positioned itself as a key player in the push for “AI sovereignty,” a growing movement advocating for European control over critical AI infrastructure, data, and innovation.
The partnership with ASML is particularly significant given the semiconductor manufacturer’s critical role in the global technology ecosystem. The two companies plan to collaborate on integrating advanced AI capabilities into semiconductor manufacturing tools and exploring new research opportunities at the intersection of artificial intelligence and chip technology.
The funding round represents a remarkable growth trajectory for Mistral. The company was valued at approximately €5.8 billion during its Series B funding round in 2024 before nearly doubling its valuation to €11.7 billion less than two years later. Industry observers view the company’s rise as evidence that Europe can produce globally competitive AI firms despite intense competition from Silicon Valley.
In recent months, Mistral has continued expanding its footprint through infrastructure investments and strategic acquisitions aimed at strengthening its position as a full-stack AI provider. The company has also attracted growing interest from governments and enterprises seeking alternatives to American cloud and AI platforms.
