WhatsApp Introduces New Group Chat Features

WhatsApp has rolled out a new set of group chat features designed to make it easier for users to stay connected, express themselves, and manage conversations—no matter what device they’re using.

As group chats continue to play a central role in how people communicate with friends, families, and communities, the platform says these updates are aimed at making everyday interactions more intuitive and personalised.

Custom Member Tags for Group Roles

One of the headline features is the introduction of member tags. Users can now assign themselves a customisable tag in each group chat to indicate their role or identity within that specific group. This is especially helpful in larger or more formal groups—such as school parent groups, clubs, or community associations—where not everyone may know each other personally.

For example, a user could appear as “Anna’s Dad” in a family-related group, while being labelled “Goalkeeper” in a sports team chat, helping group members quickly understand who’s who.

Turning Text Into Stickers

WhatsApp is also expanding creative expression with text stickers. Users can now turn any word into a sticker simply by typing the text into Sticker Search. Newly created text stickers can be saved directly into sticker packs, eliminating the need to first send them in a chat before saving.

The feature allows users to add emphasis and personality to messages, making conversations more visually engaging.

Smarter Event Reminders in Group Chats

Managing group plans is also getting easier. When creating and sending an event in a group chat, users can now set custom early reminders for invitees. These reminders help ensure participants don’t miss important moments—whether it’s commuting to a party, attending a meeting, or joining a scheduled call on time.

Building on Existing Group Features

These updates build on a growing list of WhatsApp group tools introduced over the years, including the ability to share large files of up to 2GB, send HD media, screen share, host voice chats, and more.

With these latest additions, WhatsApp continues to position group chats as a more organised, expressive, and practical space for everyday communication.
