Africa-linked deep-tech startup ChipMango has raised $1.9 million in funding to expand its semiconductor engineering operations, train more chip-design engineers and grow its presence across Africa, the United States and Europe.
The funding round was led by Atlantica Ventures, with participation from DFS, Kaleo Ventures, Madica, Trilinear Technologies, Malta Ventures and other strategic investors.
The investment places ChipMango among a relatively small group of African-linked startups tackling the semiconductor industry — an area that could become increasingly important as artificial intelligence drives global demand for chips, intelligent hardware and specialised engineering talent.
Building Africa’s chip-design talent
Founded by Ola Fadiran and Jovan Andjelich, ChipMango operates at the intersection of semiconductor engineering, artificial intelligence and skills development.
Rather than manufacturing physical semiconductor chips, the company focuses on chip design and verification, while simultaneously developing engineers capable of working on commercial semiconductor projects.
Its model involves training engineers using industry-aligned tools and workflows before deploying that talent on commercial semiconductor programmes.
The company believes Africa’s growing pool of engineering talent could play a bigger role in the global semiconductor value chain.
“The next era of AI will not be defined by software alone. It will depend on who can design the chips, systems and intelligent hardware that power it,” ChipMango founder and CEO Ola Fadiran said.
“ChipMango is expanding access to those capabilities so more regions can help build the technologies shaping the future.”
Funding will accelerate engineering and AI development
ChipMango plans to use the new capital to increase its engineering and product-development capacity and take on additional commercial chip-design projects.
The startup will also expand its AI-native learning and workforce platform, while investing further in edge AI, intelligent sensors and hardware technologies.
Another major part of the strategy is international expansion.
ChipMango plans to grow its operations across Africa, Europe and the United States, including establishing a European Design Centre in Malta in partnership with Malta Ventures.
In Africa, the company is also working on initiatives in Kigali, Rwanda, focused on developing semiconductor capabilities, engineering talent and AI infrastructure.
South Africa plays a role in ChipMango’s strategy
South Africa is already part of ChipMango’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.
The company works with the Carl and Emily Fuchs Institute for Microelectronics at the University of Pretoria, alongside international technology and academic partners including Synopsys and Ohlone College in California.
The partnerships are aimed at narrowing the gap between academic engineering education and the practical skills required to work on commercial semiconductor programmes.
ChipMango is also an Arm Approved Training Partner, enabling it to provide official training around Arm technologies.
Its training platform gives engineers browser-based access to professional semiconductor design environments and electronic design automation tools similar to those used in commercial chip-development projects.
Taking African engineering talent global
ChipMango’s strategy comes at a time when the global semiconductor industry is facing a shortage of specialised engineers.
Rather than attempting to compete immediately in the extremely capital-intensive business of manufacturing chips, ChipMango is targeting the design and engineering portion of the semiconductor value chain.
This potentially allows African engineers to participate in international semiconductor programmes without requiring billions of dollars to construct fabrication facilities on the continent.
Atlantica Ventures founding partner Anikó Szigetvári believes the availability of skilled engineers is becoming one of the industry’s biggest constraints.
“The semiconductor industry’s binding constraint is no longer capital, it is people,” Szigetvári said.
She added that ChipMango is demonstrating the potential to turn Africa’s engineering talent into globally competitive chip-design capabilities.
Commercial projects already underway
ChipMango is not relying exclusively on training.
The startup also provides commercial semiconductor engineering and verification services to technology companies.
One example is its work with Trilinear Technologies, which develops high-performance DisplayPort and multimedia intellectual property for systems-on-chip, FPGAs and ASICs.
ChipMango engineers support verification work that helps Trilinear increase its engineering capacity across consumer, automotive and industrial applications.
This creates an interesting business model for the startup: ChipMango can develop semiconductor engineers through its training ecosystem and deploy that talent into revenue-generating international engineering projects.
Deep tech emerges as Africa’s next startup frontier
The $1.9 million raise also highlights a broader shift taking place within Africa’s startup ecosystem.
While fintech, e-commerce and logistics have traditionally attracted much of the continent’s venture capital, startups are increasingly exploring deeper layers of technology including artificial intelligence infrastructure, semiconductor engineering and advanced hardware.
For ChipMango, the opportunity lies in positioning African engineers as participants in the technologies underpinning the global AI boom rather than simply consumers of them.
Co-founder and COO Jovan Andjelich said the latest investment gives the company the foundation required for its next stage of expansion.
“This funding gives ChipMango the foundation for its next phase of growth,” he said.
“We will expand engineering capability, deepen industry and academic partnerships, and create opportunities for exceptional engineers to contribute to cutting-edge semiconductor and AI programs while delivering measurable value for customers.”
With semiconductor talent becoming increasingly valuable globally, ChipMango’s bet is that Africa can carve out a meaningful position in the industry — not necessarily by manufacturing the world’s chips, but by developing the engineers who help design them.
