Vodacom ignites green with Eco-Warriors Sustainability Competition

In a bold step towards shaping a greener, more sustainable future, Vodacom South Africa has launched the Eco-Warriors Sustainability Competition — a nationwide learner-led initiative designed to inspire and empower young environmental innovators.

A Movement for Learner-Led Climate Action

Targeting Grade 9 to 11 learners from Vodacom-supported Schools of Excellence across KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, the Eco-Warriors Competition goes beyond being just another school challenge. It is a call to action — inviting South Africa’s youth to create tech-enabled, real-world solutions that address pressing environmental issues in their schools and communities.

“The solutions to our biggest challenges are already coming from young minds,” said Takalani Netshitenzhe, Director of External and Regulatory Affairs for Vodacom South Africa and Chairperson of the Vodacom Foundation. “Eco-Warriors is our investment in a generation of problem-solvers who think boldly, act locally, and innovate sustainably. Through this programme, we aim to ignite lifelong purpose and community impact.”

Empowering Innovation Through Education and Technology

The competition is rooted in Vodacom’s long-term commitment to education, technology, and sustainability — three core pillars of the company’s purpose to protect the planet while empowering people. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (SDG 4), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Climate Action (SDG 13).

Learners will form teams and compete under four key environmental themes:

  • Waste Management

  • Energy Conservation

  • Water Conservation

  • Biodiversity Protection

Entries may include innovative recycling programmes, solar energy concepts, water-saving devices, or creative multimedia campaigns that raise awareness and inspire change. Vodacom will support participants with virtual workshops, learning toolkits, and mentorship sessions to guide project development.

Recognising Creativity and Impact

Submissions will be evaluated based on innovation, creativity, technological application, feasibility, impact, and presentation quality. The top three winning schools will receive funding and mentorship support to bring their projects to life, with winners also gaining exposure across Vodacom’s digital platforms.

Driving Purpose Through Partnership

The Eco-Warriors initiative builds on Vodacom’s expanding network of purpose-driven environmental partnerships. Through collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, Vodacom has already deployed digital learning solutions in underserved communities. Its partnership with Circular Energy advances safe e-waste disposal and recycling, while its work with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) promotes marine conservation using digital tools and awareness campaigns.

“We believe in the power of partnerships to scale impact and support purpose-led interventions such as the Eco-Warriors campaign,” Netshitenzhe concluded. “By working together across sectors and investing in education initiatives that promote environmental awareness, we can build a more sustainable future.”
