Judith Owigar Is Championing Sustainable Innovation

Judith Owigar is redefining the future of urban living and gender equity in Africa—one innovative solution at a time. As a Smart and Electric Mobility Expert at UN-Habitat, Judith is at the forefront of tackling some of the most pressing global issues: climate change, rapid urbanization, and the integration of technology into sustainable development.

A passionate advocate for social impact, Judith has made it her life’s mission to use technology as a tool for empowerment. Her career spans a wide range of transformative initiatives, with a particular focus on improving the lives of women and marginalized communities.

Judith is the co-founder of AkiraChix, a pioneering nonprofit that equips young African women with technical skills to design and implement tech-based solutions. By nurturing a new generation of female technologists, AkiraChix is helping to close the gender gap in STEM across the continent.

In addition to her nonprofit work, Judith founded Juakali Workforce, a digital platform that connects skilled laborers in Kenya’s informal construction sector with job opportunities, boosting livelihoods and supporting dignified employment.

Her impact is not limited to Kenya. Judith has consulted for an array of global organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Wuppertal Institute, Clear Outcomes, and the Nike Foundation. Through these partnerships, she contributes to shaping inclusive and sustainable policy frameworks worldwide.

Recognized for her leadership and vision, Judith is both an East African Acumen Fellow and an International Focus Fellow. She has spoken at prominent global events such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, where she shared the stage with former U.S. President Barack Obama and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Judith Owigar continues to break barriers and build bridges—between technology and society, between global development goals and local action, and most importantly, between potential and opportunity.
