WhatsApp is deepening its integration with Instagram and Facebook by rolling out a new feature that allows users to access and share content from their Meta accounts directly inside WhatsApp.
The feature gives users access to stories, posts and Reels they have previously shared on Instagram and Facebook, removing the need to jump between apps when they want to send content in a WhatsApp conversation or repurpose it as a Status update.
Instagram and Facebook content comes directly to WhatsApp
According to WABetaInfo, Instagram and Facebook are being added as new sources inside WhatsApp’s media picker.
When selecting media, eligible users can switch between available sources and browse content from their connected Instagram or Facebook accounts. Stories, posts and Reels are displayed in a familiar grid, allowing users to select both recent and older content.
This means a Reel previously published on Instagram, for example, can be selected from inside WhatsApp and shared with a contact without first opening Instagram, downloading the content or manually moving between the two apps.
Users can share content in chats and WhatsApp Status
The integration isn’t limited to private conversations. Users can also access their Instagram and Facebook media while creating WhatsApp Status updates.
That could make the feature particularly useful for creators, businesses, artists and everyday users who regularly publish the same or similar content across Meta’s platforms.
Rather than separately uploading content to Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, users will have another way of accessing previously published material directly from WhatsApp.
Meta Accounts Center is key to the integration
There is one important requirement: users must connect their WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Center.
Meta began integrating WhatsApp with Accounts Center previously, allowing users to connect WhatsApp with Facebook and Instagram and enable cross-platform functionality such as resharing WhatsApp Status updates to Instagram or Facebook Stories. Adding WhatsApp to Accounts Center remains optional.
Users who prefer keeping WhatsApp separate from their Facebook and Instagram accounts do not have to connect them. However, without the Accounts Center connection, Instagram and Facebook will not appear as media sources inside WhatsApp’s media picker.
Integration does not give Instagram access to WhatsApp media
The new feature works in one direction, according to WABetaInfo.
Connecting the accounts allows WhatsApp to access eligible content users have shared through their Facebook and Instagram accounts. It does not mean Facebook or Instagram gain access to media stored within WhatsApp.
WhatsApp also continues to protect personal messages and calls with end-to-end encryption regardless of whether a user chooses to connect their account through Accounts Center.
Meta continues bringing its biggest apps closer together
The update is another sign of Meta’s wider effort to make its family of apps work more closely together.
WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook have traditionally served different purposes, but features such as Accounts Center and cross-platform sharing are gradually reducing the friction involved in moving content between them.
For creators and businesses in particular, the ability to quickly reuse Instagram and Facebook content on WhatsApp could make WhatsApp Status an increasingly important extension of their social media publishing strategy.
Rollout begins on Android and iOS
The feature is currently being made available to some users running the latest WhatsApp updates for Android and iOS, with WABetaInfo reporting that access is expected to expand to more people over the coming weeks.
Because the rollout is gradual, not every user — including those using compatible versions of WhatsApp — will necessarily see Instagram and Facebook inside their media picker immediately. A date for universal availability has not yet been announced.
