Meta Introduces Passkeys for Facebook Mobile Users

Passkeys, a new login method developed by the FIDO Alliance, allow users to access their accounts using device-based authentication methods such as a fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN. Unlike passwords, passkeys cannot be guessed or stolen through phishing or scam websites, offering users a more robust form of protection.

Passkeys Coming to Facebook and Messenger

Meta announced that passkeys will soon be available to Facebook users on both iOS and Android devices. In the coming months, the company will also bring passkey functionality to Messenger. Users who have already set up a passkey for Facebook will be able to use the same one to access Messenger once the feature becomes available.

What Makes Passkeys Different?

Passkeys are secure digital credentials that stay stored on your mobile device and are never shared or stored by Meta. This means users can log in faster and more securely without the need to memorize or type in a password. As long as they have a compatible mobile device and a Facebook account, users can simply authenticate using their fingerprint, face scan, or PIN.

“Passkeys offer peace of mind in a world where phishing and password-based attacks are still all too common,” Meta said in a statement. “They represent a significant step forward in protecting user accounts without adding friction to the login process.”

Beyond Login: Future Features for Passkeys

Meta plans to expand the use of passkeys beyond just logging in. Users will eventually be able to use them to autofill payment details with Meta Pay and to protect encrypted message backups in Messenger, offering a seamless and secure user experience across Meta services.

Easy Setup in Accounts Center

Setting up a passkey is simple and can be done through the Accounts Center in the Facebook Settings menu. Users may also be prompted to set one up the next time they log in. While passkeys will become the default option for supported devices, users will still have the choice to log in using their password if their device doesn’t support passkeys yet.

A Step Toward a Password-Free Future

As an active member of the FIDO Alliance, Meta is working alongside other tech leaders to reduce global reliance on passwords. This move aligns with industry-wide efforts to improve digital security while streamlining user experiences.
