A recent survey conducted by cybersecurity company Kaspersky has revealed that 91% of parents in South Africa use digital gadgets to entertain their children while traveling or to create some free time for themselves. The trend is similar across the Middle East, Türkiye, and Africa (META) region, where 89% of parents admit to relying on devices for the same purpose.
The study also highlights that half (50%) of children in South Africa and 52% in the META region receive their first personal gadget—such as a smartphone or tablet—at a young age, between 3 and 7 years old. Despite this early exposure to technology, a significant portion of parents (26% in South Africa and 22% in META) have not discussed internet safety rules with their children. This lack of guidance leaves young users vulnerable to potential online threats.
Children Can’t Live Without Their Devices
The survey also found that children themselves place a high value on their gadgets. In South Africa, 72% of children say they “cannot live without” their devices, while in the broader META region, the number is even higher at 78%. The most desirable gadgets for children include smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles, highlighting the growing role of technology in their daily lives.
The Need for Digital Parenting and Cybersecurity Measures
Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel for the META region at Kaspersky, cautions parents against leaving their children to navigate the digital world without supervision.
“Most parents give their children gadgets in order to entertain them, spare some time for themselves, or calm them down. However, children shouldn’t use digital devices uncontrolled. Parents should monitor their child’s digital life better by limiting screen time and having conversations, but a security solution is also needed,” Jedidi explains.
He further emphasizes that applying parental control does not signal distrust, but rather acts as a “sensible precaution” to safeguard both children and their data.
“With parental controls, parents can oversee which websites their children visit, which games they play, and block access to harmful content. These measures help prevent exposure to cyber threats, protect finances and confidential information, and create a safer digital space for children,” he adds.
Kaspersky’s Recommendations for Online Safety
To help parents ensure their children’s online safety, Kaspersky suggests the following proactive measures:
- Stay informed about the latest online threats and actively monitor children’s digital activities.
- Have open conversations with children about online risks and set clear rules for digital engagement.
- Install security solutions on children’s devices to prevent exposure to cyber threats.
- Use digital parenting tools, such as Kaspersky Safe Kids, to track and regulate online activities effectively.
With children becoming increasingly dependent on technology from a young age, the responsibility falls on parents to implement proper digital safety measures—ensuring that gadgets remain a tool for learning and entertainment rather than a gateway to potential cyber dangers.
