Rising with Intention Women in Tech SMME Awards 2024

“The ones who make history are not the ones who follow the rules, but those who break them.” These resonant words from Tashline Jooste, CEO of the Innovator Trust, set an empowering tone for the 9th annual Women in Tech (WIT) SMME Awards 2024, a celebration of South Africa’s leading female innovators.

With the theme “Rise with Intention”, the event spotlighted the transformative power of intentional leadership and creativity in shaping the future of technology and entrepreneurship.

Inspiring Leadership and Transformative Growth

In her keynote, Jooste shared the remarkable achievements of the Innovator Trust, which has incubated over 200 SMMEs, generating R1.7 billion in revenue over three years and creating more than 4,000 jobs.

“To rise with intention means going beyond merely hoping for change,”

she said.

“It’s about taking strategic, bold steps to shape our futures and the future of technology in South Africa.”

The event, hosted by the dynamic Hulisani Ravele, featured insightful panel discussions moderated by the celebrated Nozipho Tshabalala. Their engaging approach fostered a collaborative atmosphere where every voice mattered, amplifying the message of inclusion and innovation.

AI for Impact: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs

A key highlight was a panel discussion on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to empower women entrepreneurs, particularly in underserved rural and township markets.

Vinolia Martin from Microsoft emphasized that AI must bridge gaps where it is needed most, stating,

“AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about using technology to reach where it matters most.”

Panelists explored the potential of AI to localize solutions for African markets, with Serisha Barrat, CEO of Lawyered Up, underscoring the importance of tailoring technologies to meet specific regional needs.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Efforts to close the digital skills gap were also spotlighted. Vodacom’s Zukiswa Phillips shared the success of initiatives like “Code Like a Girl,” which aims to train 1 million girls in digital skills across South Africa. Charmaine Houvet, CEO of CISCO, urged women to actively upskill in AI and predictive analysis, advocating for greater female representation in the tech space, where they currently account for less than 9%.

Honoring Women Who Lead with Purpose

The awards ceremony celebrated outstanding female entrepreneurs who are redefining their industries through technology. Among the honorees were:

  • Kutlwano Mzolo (Amafu Technologies): Enterprise Development Top Female Achiever
  • Thabile Makhoba (Makhoba Professional Services): Supplier Development Top Female Achiever, Highest Percentage Growth
  • Tanganedzeni Mfamadi: Youth Entrepreneurship Programme Top Female Achiever
  • Simangele Mphahlele (ejoobi): Innovator Trust Enterprise Development Pinnacle Award

These leaders exemplify the transformative power of women-led SMMEs to drive sustainable growth and meaningful societal change.

A Call to Action

The event concluded with an impassioned message from scientist and entrepreneur Siyabulela Xuza, who urged women to be fearless and “ruthlessly curious” in their pursuits. “The future of Africa lies in the hands of women who rise with intention and break through barriers,” he declared.

Collaborative Success

The success of WIT 2024 was made possible through partnerships with Vodacom, Microsoft, and the GBV Response Fund. These collaborations ensured that women-owned SMMEs in South Africa’s ICT sector continue to thrive, demonstrating the enduring impact of intentional investment in female empowerment.

As Jooste aptly stated,

“Ask yourself, what does it mean to be an intentional woman? How will you lead the wave of change in your industry, community, and country? The future is in your hands.”

The Women in Tech SMME Awards 2024 was not just a celebration—it was a movement, calling on women everywhere to lead with intention, break barriers, and shape the future boldly.
