GirlCode Hackathon 2024 Unites 10 Cities to Drive Innovation

In a dazzling display of innovation and female empowerment, the GirlCode Hackathon 2024 concluded its landmark event, celebrating a decade of coding excellence and commitment to global sustainability. This year, the hackathon expanded its reach, spanning across ten vibrant African cities, marking a historic milestone in the initiative’s journey.

Held annually in August to honor Women’s Month in South Africa, the GirlCode Hackathon has become a beacon for young women in technology. This year’s event, commemorating the 10th anniversary of GirlCode, showcased the transformative power of technology in addressing the pressing challenges outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participants from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines converged over a 30-hour coding marathon, driven by a mission to leverage technology for social good. The overarching theme of this year’s hackathon emphasized aligning innovation with female empowerment to make a tangible impact on the SDGs.

Innovative Solutions for Global Impact

The hackathon tasked teams with selecting one of the 17 SDGs and developing technology-driven solutions to address specific issues within their communities. From enhancing educational access to improving healthcare delivery and advancing climate action, the projects presented were both creative and impactful.

Teams submitted initial ideas in mid-August, with presentations highlighting their vision, technological approach, and potential impact. The subsequent demo phase featured working prototypes, showcased through engaging videos that demonstrated the functionality and innovation of each project.

The grand finale, held on August 31st and September 1st, 2024, brought together finalists in a high-energy, collaborative environment. Over the course of the event, participants had the opportunity to refine their projects, receive mentorship from industry experts, and present their solutions to a panel of esteemed judges.
