On June 29-30, Lelapa AI hosted the Vulavula API hackathon, where developers showcased their talents by using the Vulavula API to solve real-world problems. The event was a resounding success, with participants demonstrating incredible creativity and dedication.

Innovative Solutions

The hackathon saw the development of several multilingual solutions, including:

  • Insurance Quote Generation WhatsApp Bot: This bot simplifies the process of obtaining insurance quotes.
  • Mobile Clinic System WhatsApp Bot: A bot designed to help users locate mobile clinics and provide healthcare tips.
  • Municipal Services WhatsApp Bot: A bot aimed at improving access to municipal services for citizens.
  • Sign Language to SA Languages Translation App: An app that translates sign language into South African languages.

Top 3 Winners

The event concluded with the announcement of the top three winners:

  1. 1st Place: UniTech UniTech developed a chatbot that uses Natural Language Understanding (NLU) to address electricity prepaid meter queries in four different languages. This AI-driven system ensures smooth data flow from the user interface to the admin dashboard, managing pending queries and issuing tickets when necessary.
  2. 2nd Place: InnovAIteers InnovAIteers created Qoutelynx, an innovative insurance quotation bot on WhatsApp. Supporting multiple languages, including isiZulu, Sesotho, and SA English, Qoutelynx simplifies obtaining insurance quotes while ensuring user information safety. It only requests user information when they are ready to take a policy.
  3. 3rd Place: Hack Squad Hack Squad developed a multilingual WhatsApp chatbot for mobile clinic finder, healthcare tips, and triage solution. By integrating with the Vulavula language translation API, this project enhances healthcare accessibility, providing an easy-to-use platform for finding nearby mobile clinics, scheduling appointments, and offering health tips, especially for women’s health.
