As a practitioner deeply embedded in the entrepreneurial development space, I often encounter a shared sentiment among my peers: a sense of frustration and uncertainty when it comes to building sustainable entrepreneurial and tech communities. This recurring theme has led me to question whether we truly understand the task at hand and if we are asking the right questions to achieve our goals.
In April, three organizations—Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, Geekulcha, and Africa is Talking—joined forces to create Tech Talk Joburg. What started as a modest gathering with only 10 attendees in our first session has grown into a vibrant community of 60 participants by our fourth session with 256 registrations. This growth is a testament to our collective vision and effort, but it also underscores the complexity and challenges of community building.
Key Lessons from Building Tech Talk Joburg
Through the journey of developing Tech Talk Joburg, we have gleaned several crucial insights:
-
Entrepreneurs Are Stakeholders, Not Products
One of the fundamental realizations we’ve had is that entrepreneurs are not mere products of our initiatives; they are vital stakeholders. This means that we cannot build effective communities without their active involvement and input. Treating entrepreneurs as integral partners rather than passive recipients of our programs shifts the dynamic towards a more collaborative and inclusive approach.
-
Enabling Development and Growth
As practitioners, we must abandon the notion that entrepreneurs need us more than we need them. Our role is not to dominate or dictate but to enable their development and growth. This perspective fosters a supportive environment where entrepreneurs feel empowered and valued. It also encourages us to design programs and initiatives that genuinely address their needs and aspirations.
-
Engaging in Dialogue, Not Monologue
Effective community building requires meaningful dialogue with our members. We must talk with our community, not at them. This means actively listening to their feedback, understanding their challenges, and co-creating solutions that resonate with their experiences. Such an approach builds trust, fosters engagement, and ensures that our efforts are relevant and impactful.
The Path Forward
As we continue to grow and evolve Tech Talk Joburg, these lessons will remain at the forefront of our efforts. We can build a sustainable and thriving community by recognizing entrepreneurs as essential stakeholders, focusing on enabling their development and fostering open dialogue. However, this journey is ongoing, and we must remain open to learning, adapting, and asking the right questions to achieve our vision.
In conclusion, the task of building entrepreneurial and tech communities is complex and multifaceted. It requires a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of our members, a commitment to collaboration, and a willingness to challenge our assumptions. By embracing these principles, we can create communities that are not only sustainable but also vibrant and dynamic, driving innovation and growth in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
