Selfie-Based Verification Aims to Build Trust Across Facebook
Meta has announced the launch of Facebook Verified, a new free verification badge designed to help users identify profiles belonging to real people as artificial intelligence continues to make it easier to generate fake accounts, content and messages.
Unlike existing paid verification services, Facebook Verified will be available at no cost and uses a simple selfie-based verification process to confirm a person’s identity. The badge will appear across key parts of Facebook where trust is especially important, including Marketplace, Dating, Groups and user profiles.
Free Verification Using a Short Video Selfie
To receive the badge, eligible users will be asked to record a short video selfie. Meta will compare the video with existing profile photos to verify that the account belongs to a real person. According to the company, the process typically takes only a few minutes to complete.
Facebook Verified is available to Facebook users aged 18 and older who meet the platform’s trust and safety requirements. Eligible accounts must be in good standing with Meta’s Community Standards, particularly those relating to fraud, scams and deceptive practices, and must show no signs of inauthentic behaviour.
The feature will not be available for Facebook Pages or Professional Mode accounts.
Designed for High-Trust Areas
Initially, the verified badge will appear in areas where users frequently interact with strangers, including Facebook Marketplace, Dating, Groups and profile pages. Meta said it plans to expand the badge to Feed posts in the future.
The company believes the feature will make it easier for people to determine whether they are communicating with a genuine individual before buying or selling goods, connecting through Facebook Dating or engaging in community discussions.
Badge Does Not Guarantee Trustworthiness
Meta stressed that the Facebook Verified badge is intended to confirm that a profile belongs to a real person who has completed the verification process and meets the company’s safety standards.
However, the badge should not be interpreted as an endorsement of a user or a guarantee that they are trustworthy. Verified users remain subject to Meta’s Community Standards and Commerce Policies, and the company encourages users to continue exercising caution when interacting with others online.
Global Rollout Begins
Facebook Verified is being rolled out gradually, beginning in selected markets before expanding globally in phases.
Meta said the new verification system reflects the growing need for clear signals of authenticity as AI-generated profiles and content become increasingly common.
The company believes the free verification badge will help preserve genuine human interactions on Facebook by giving users greater confidence that there is a real person behind the profile they are engaging with.
