Over $2.2 Billion in Fraudulent Transactions Prevented
Apple Inc. has revealed that its App Store ecosystem prevented more than $2.2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions in 2025 alone, highlighting the scale of digital threats facing global platforms. This brings the total amount of fraud stopped over the past six years to more than $11.2 billion, reinforcing the company’s long-standing focus on security and user trust.
AI and Human Review Drive Security Efforts
The tech giant attributes much of its success to a combination of advanced artificial intelligence systems and human oversight. These multilayered defenses are designed to detect evolving fraud tactics, from fake app submissions to malicious payment activities. In 2025, more than 9.1 million app submissions were reviewed, with over 2 million rejected for failing to meet strict privacy, security, and quality guidelines.
Crackdown on Fraudulent Accounts and Developers
Fraudulent account creation remains a major challenge across digital platforms. Apple reported blocking over 1.1 billion fake account creation attempts and deactivating an additional 40.4 million accounts linked to fraud and abuse.
On the developer side, the company terminated 193,000 developer accounts over fraud concerns and rejected more than 138,000 developer enrollments, preventing bad actors from entering the ecosystem.
Malicious Apps and Piracy Networks Targeted
Apple also intensified efforts against malicious software and piracy. In 2025, it blocked 28,000 illegitimate apps distributed through pirate storefronts, including malware and counterfeit versions of legitimate apps.
Additionally, nearly 59,000 apps were removed for deceptive “bait-and-switch” tactics, where apps change functionality after approval to commit fraud.
Fake Reviews and Discovery Fraud Under Scrutiny
Maintaining trust in app discovery remains a key priority. Apple processed over 1.3 billion ratings and reviews in 2025, blocking close to 195 million fraudulent submissions designed to manipulate rankings and visibility.
The company also removed thousands of deceptive apps from search results and charts to ensure fair exposure for legitimate developers.
Payment Security Strengthened Across Ecosystem
With over 680,000 apps using Apple’s payment technologies, the company continues to invest heavily in transaction security. In 2025, it prevented the use of more than 5.4 million stolen credit cards and banned nearly 2 million accounts from making further transactions.
A Growing Global Marketplace
Despite rising threats, the App Store continues to expand, now serving over 850 million weekly visitors across 175 storefronts worldwide. Apple says its ongoing investment in security ensures that both users and developers can operate in a safe, trusted environment.
Commitment to User Safety and Trust
As digital fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, Apple’s latest report signals a broader industry trend: the growing reliance on AI-driven security systems to protect online ecosystems. The company maintains that safeguarding users while enabling developers to thrive will remain central to the App Store’s future.
