Apple Unveils AirPods Max 2 with Smarter Audio

Apple has officially introduced the AirPods Max 2, the next generation of its premium over-ear headphones, bringing significant upgrades in sound quality, noise cancellation, and intelligent features powered by its new H2 chip.

Set to be available for order from March 25, the new headphones mark a notable evolution of Apple’s high-end audio offering, blending advanced computational audio with user-focused innovations.

Smarter, More Powerful Audio Experience

At the heart of the AirPods Max 2 is Apple’s H2 chip, enabling a range of new features and performance improvements. The company says Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation, allowing users to better block out environmental noise such as traffic or airplane engines.

Transparency mode has also been refined, offering more natural ambient sound when users need to stay aware of their surroundings.

Elevated Sound Quality and Lossless Audio

Apple has upgraded the audio architecture with a new high dynamic range amplifier, delivering cleaner, richer, and more detailed sound. Spatial Audio has also been enhanced, offering improved instrument separation, more consistent bass, and more natural mids and highs.

For the first time, AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio via USB-C, making them a viable tool for professional workflows in music production apps like Logic Pro. The headphones also enable creators to record studio-quality audio and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.

New Intelligent Features Powered by Apple Intelligence

AirPods Max 2 introduce a suite of smart capabilities designed to adapt to users’ environments and behaviors:

  • Adaptive Audio dynamically balances noise cancellation and transparency
  • Conversation Awareness lowers playback when users start speaking
  • Live Translation enables real-time multilingual communication
  • Voice Isolation improves call clarity by reducing background noise
  • Camera Remote allows users to control photos and videos remotely
  • Personalized Volume adjusts sound levels based on listening habits

These features are powered in part by Apple’s broader push into AI-driven experiences, known as Apple Intelligence.

Designed for Creators and Everyday Users

Beyond entertainment, Apple is positioning AirPods Max 2 as a tool for creators. New studio-quality recording capabilities aim to support podcasters, musicians, and interviewers, while ultra-low latency audio enhances gaming performance across Apple devices.

Sustainability Push Continues

In line with its Apple 2030 environmental goals, Apple says the AirPods Max 2 are built using recycled materials, including 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets and recycled gold and tin in circuit boards. Packaging is also fully fiber-based and recyclable.

Pricing and Availability

AirPods Max 2 will be available in five colors — midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue — with retail pricing starting at $549 (U.S.). The headphones will begin shipping and arrive in stores in early April across more than 30 countries.
