Apple Introduces More Affordable iPhone 17e

Apple has officially announced the launch of the iPhone 17e, a new smartphone designed to deliver flagship-level performance and features at a more accessible price.

Powered by Apple’s latest A19 chip, the device promises faster performance for everyday tasks, advanced artificial intelligence features, and improved gaming capabilities. According to Apple, the six-core CPU is up to twice as fast as that found in the iPhone 11, allowing users to handle everything from multitasking to AI-powered tools more efficiently.

The smartphone also introduces C1X, Apple’s latest in-house cellular modem, which is said to be up to two times faster than the modem found in the iPhone 16e, while using significantly less energy to extend battery life.

Advanced Camera and Video Capabilities

The iPhone 17e features a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, capable of capturing high-resolution photos and recording 4K Dolby Vision video.

The camera system includes an optical-quality 2x telephoto zoom, effectively giving users two cameras in one. Apple says the upgraded imaging pipeline also enhances portrait photography, automatically recognising people and pets and allowing users to adjust focus and depth even after the photo is taken.

Video recording is also improved with Spatial Audio, which delivers immersive sound when played back through compatible devices such as AirPods or the Apple Vision Pro.

Durable Design and Improved Display

Apple says durability was a key focus for the new model. The iPhone 17e features an aerospace-grade aluminium body and a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display.

The screen is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims provides three times better scratch resistance compared with the previous generation. The display also offers up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness, improving visibility in bright outdoor conditions.

The device supports Face ID for secure authentication and includes the customizable Action button, allowing quick access to functions such as the flashlight or other shortcuts.

MagSafe, Fast Charging and Longer Battery Life

Battery performance is another highlight, with Apple promising all-day battery life thanks to improved power efficiency from the A19 chip and C1X modem.

The iPhone 17e supports USB-C fast charging, reaching up to 50% battery in roughly 30 minutes with a compatible adapter. It also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, enabling seamless compatibility with a wide range of magnetic accessories including chargers, wallets, and cases.

Satellite Connectivity and Safety Features

The device also continues Apple’s push into satellite connectivity. When cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, users can still send messages, request roadside assistance, and contact emergency services using satellite features.

Additional safety tools include Crash Detection, which can automatically alert emergency responders if the phone detects a severe car accident.

iOS 26 and AI-Powered Features

The iPhone 17e launches with iOS 26, bringing new design updates and artificial intelligence features through Apple Intelligence.

These capabilities include live language translation in calls and messages, visual search tools that work directly from the screen, and call screening to filter unknown numbers. The system also introduces tools like Hold Assist, which can remain on hold until a live customer service agent becomes available.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 17e will be available in black, white, and soft pink, all featuring a premium matte finish.

Pre-orders begin on 4 March, with global availability starting 11 March in more than 70 countries. The device starts at $599 and comes with 256GB of storage, double the base storage offered in the previous generation at the same price.
