MultiChoice Celebrates 30 Years of Transforming Zambia

Three decades ago, Zambia’s media industry looked nothing like it does today. Since setting up operations in Lusaka in 1995, MultiChoice Zambia has not only transformed how the country watches television but has also played a defining role in shaping its creative economy, cultural identity, and technological advancement.

Leading a Broadcasting Revolution

The arrival of the MultiChoice brand in Zambia marked the dawn of satellite television in the country — a groundbreaking step that redefined entertainment for local audiences. Over time, the company expanded access to premium content with the launch of GOtv for affordable viewing, DStv/GOtv Stream for on-the-go access, and Showmax for digital streaming.

“Our evolution has mirrored Zambia’s own growth,” the company said. “We’ve helped redefine how entertainment is shared and experienced, offering flexible and accessible content for every viewer.”

Empowering Through Knowledge and Connectivity

Beyond technology, MultiChoice’s greatest impact has been social. By connecting viewers to international news, sports, documentaries, and educational content, Zambians have gained access to a global knowledge network — expanding horizons and inspiring lifelong learning.

“Digital connectivity empowers users to become part of global conversations while celebrating their own local stories,” the company noted. “Zambians have not only consumed global content but have also contributed their unique voices and culture to the world.”

Building a Thriving Creative Industry

Over the past 30 years, MultiChoice has been instrumental in the rise of Zambia’s television and film production industry. Local content has flourished on platforms like Zambezi Magic, home to hit series such as Mpali, Zuba, Makofi, Mungoma, Ubuntu, Ten Tamanga Street and Date My Family Zambia.

This surge in local storytelling has created thousands of jobs across production, advertising, events, and technology sectors — driving what the company calls an “economic multiplier effect.”

Central to this growth is the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), whose Lusaka academy trains young creatives through masterclasses, mentorship, and hands-on experience. MTF graduates are now industry-ready professionals driving Zambia’s content creation ecosystem forward.

A shining example is Cosmas Nga’ndwe, an MTF alumnus who recently won an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Indigenous Language Film — a milestone that highlights the global potential of Zambian talent.

A Commitment to Partnership and Growth

MultiChoice’s three-decade journey reflects more than business success — it’s a story of partnership, empowerment, and national development. The company emphasizes that its mission goes beyond entertainment: it’s about long-term investment in people, innovation, and culture.

“We see ourselves as a trusted development partner — creating jobs, driving technological innovation, and empowering youth to create content that will shape Zambia’s identity for generations to come,” the company said.

This partnership extends internally too. MultiChoice invests in employee growth through training, leadership development, and wellness programs that encourage staff to excel and contribute to the company’s broader mission.

Collaborating for a Cultural Future

MultiChoice’s impact also reaches beyond its own platforms. Partnerships with ZNBC and other free-to-air broadcasters have expanded the reach of local content, ensuring that Zambian stories are shared widely across the nation.

As MultiChoice Zambia looks to the future, it remains focused on nurturing homegrown creativity, empowering local talent, and elevating Zambian voices across Africa and beyond.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to see Zambian stories gain recognition and MTF graduates shape the country’s film industry,” the company concluded. “We are proud to contribute beyond the screen — not just to entertain, but to help define Zambia’s cultural legacy.”
