​Ethel Cofie: Championing Women’s Empowerment in Africa’s Tech Industry​

Ethel Delali Cofie, a Ghanaian technology entrepreneur, has emerged as a leading figure in promoting women’s participation in Africa’s tech landscape. As the founder of Women in Tech Africa (WiTA), she has established the continent’s largest network for women in technology, spanning over 30 countries.

Building a Pan-African Tech Sisterhood

Cofie’s journey began with a vision to bridge the gender gap in technology. Through WiTA, she has created a platform that not only connects women across Africa but also provides them with opportunities for growth, mentorship, and leadership in the tech sector. The organization boasts physical chapters in countries including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, as well as international chapters in Germany and Ireland .​

Initiatives Driving Change

Under Cofie’s leadership, WiTA has launched several impactful initiatives:

  • Women in Tech Week: An annual event that brings together women in technology for workshops, leadership training, and networking opportunities.

  • MTN GirlCode: In collaboration with the MTN Foundation, this program aims to increase female participation in coding and app development in Ghana.

  • #HerFuture Africa Boot Camp: A partnership with the Africa Technology Business Network (ATBN) and Comic Relief, this boot camp empowers young women with entrepreneurial skills to address societal challenges.

  • #CTA-Agrictech: In collaboration with the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), this initiative encourages women to develop ICT solutions for the agriculture sector .​

Recognition and Impact

Cofie’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She was honored with the United Nations Equals Award for Leadership in 2018, recognizing her commitment to bridging the digital gender divide .

Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Valley View University in Ghana, a master’s degree in Distribution Systems from the University of Brighton, and an Executive Degree in Leadership, Business, and Entrepreneurship from the Yale School of Management .​

Through her work with WiTA and other initiatives, Ethel Cofie continues to inspire and empower a new generation of African women in technology, fostering innovation and inclusivity across the continent.
