Apps and websites to give back on Mandela Day

While we hope the worst of the COVID-19 crisis is behind us, many South Africans face challenging times with low employment rates as well as rising fuel, education and transport prices. This Mandela Day (18 July), those of us who are a bit more fortunate can make a difference for worthy causes and communities in need—straight from our Android smartphones.

GoFundMe is one of the world’s most trusted online fundraising and crowdfunding platforms. Here, you can donate to a cause or person that needs support or set up a fundraiser to help an NGO or someone in your community.

South Africa’s BackaBuddy is a crowdfunding platform that lets you create online campaigns to raise funds for causes you care about. You can quickly and easily create a fundraiser, then share your campaign link with your friends, family, and colleagues to raise funds. You can also browse campaigns on the portal.

Do you want to give some of your time and expertise to a worthy cause? ForGood is a portal that invites you to get involved as a volunteer. It provides opportunities to give back the way you want to – by enabling skills-based volunteering opportunities, goods donations and funding experiences.

 Gift of the Givers is a national treasure—an energetic team that is always there to lend a hand in a crisis, whether it’s COViD-19, Day Zero in the Eastern Cape or flooding in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Donating to this organisation is a great way to make a difference.

This platform connects people with charities around the world. You can search charities by category and donate money with a few clicks.

  1. PayFast

PayFast has a list of verified charities spanning every region of the country and encompassing any cause you can imagine. You can search for one you are passionate about and easily donate from the website.
